A Note on Query Order : Solving the Missing

We show that the order in which diierent-size-rounds of parallel queries to p i , i 1, are made never matters. This solves a problem left open by previous papers in that area HHH98a, BC]. Our results shed new light on the number-of-queries tradeoos between parallel, a mixture of parallel and sequential, and pure sequential access to p i oracles.

A note on cycle spectra of line graphs

We show that line graphsG = L(H) with σ2(G) ≥ 7 contain cycles of all lengths k, 2 rad(H)+ 1 ≤ k ≤ c(G). This implies that every line graph of such a graph with 2 rad(H) ≥ ∆(H) is subpancyclic, improving a recent result of Xiong and Li. The bound on σ2(G) is best possible.

A note on first-order spectra with binary relations

The spectrum of a first-order sentence is the set of the cardinalities of its finite models. In this paper, we consider the spectra of sentences over binary relations that use at least three variables. We show that for every such sentence Φ, there is a sentence Φ that uses the same number of variables, but only one symmetric binary relation, such that its spectrum is linearly proportional to th...

A note on the spectra of tridiagonal matrices

Using orthogonal polynomials, we give a different approach to some recent results on tridi-agonal matrices. 1. Introduction and preliminaries. Most of the results on tridiagonal matrices can be seen in the context of orthogonal polynomials. Here, we will see two examples. The aim of this note is to give simplified proofs of some recent results on tridiagonal matrices , using arguments from the ...

4 Missing levels in correlated spectra

Complete spectroscopy (measurements of a complete sequence of consecutive levels) is often considered as a prerequisite to extract fluctuation properties of spectra. It is shown how this goal can be achieved even if only a fraction of levels are observed. The case of levels behaving as eigenvalues of random matrices, of current interest in nuclear physics, is worked out in detail. It is by now ...
